Compound Interest - the Real Wealth Builder

When it comes to building wealth through investing, few concepts are as powerful—and as misunderstood—as compound interest. Often called the “eighth wonder of the world,” compound interest is the process where your investment earns returns, and those returns then earn returns themselves. Over time, this snowball effect can turn modest investments into substantial portfolios.

What Is Compound Interest?

In simple terms, compound interest means you earn interest not just on your original investment (the principal), but also on the interest that accumulates over time. In the share market, this happens when you reinvest dividends or your investment grows in value and you leave it untouched, allowing gains to build upon gains.

A Real-Life Example

Let’s say you invest $10,000 in a diversified share portfolio that earns an average annual return of 8%. If you simply let that money sit and grow, here’s what happens:

  • After 1 year: $10,800

  • After 5 years: $14,693

  • After 10 years: $21,589

  • After 20 years: $46,610

Notice how the growth accelerates over time? That’s compound interest at work. The longer you stay invested, the more dramatic the effect becomes.

Let’s look at what happens if you choose to add $100pm to this investment (most of us can easily find $100pm – bring your lunch 1 day per week; sell something on ebay; make a pizza vs buying takeaway etc).  The final value after 20 years is estimated to  be $105,917.80.

That’s more than double, simply by adding $1,200 each year—showing how powerful consistent contributions combined with compound interest can be.

Time Is Your Best Friend

The key to making compound interest work for you in the share market is time. The earlier you start investing, the more time your money has to grow. Even small, regular investments can lead to impressive results if you stay consistent and patient.

Compound interest isn’t just a financial concept—it’s a mindset. It rewards discipline, patience, and long-term thinking. Whether you're investing for retirement (this is already happening with your superannuation), or simply to grow your wealth, understanding and harnessing compound interest can make a world of difference and create true financial independence.
